The largest movement of displaced people through Europe’s borders since World War Two occurred in 2015. During that year, 1.1 million crossed into Turkey, and one million migrants made a dangerous journey across the Mediterranean. Around 850 000 crossed via Turkey to Greece. This year, in 2016, several thousands of migrants arrived in Greece and have been unable to travel on through Europe because of closed borders with neighbouring countries.

• The International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC) in partnership with the Hellenic Red Cross seeks a Field Interpreter/Translator to support facilitation of communication and community engagement between beneficiaries and Red Cross staff and volunteers. This position will support Red Cross teams working in reception sites in their daily activities regarding assessment, information provision, communication activities and referrals. S/he may be required to liaise with key partner organisations and other stakeholders and agencies relevant to the sectors of work where Red Cross is engaged.



- Interprets between the beneficiary in his/her language into Greek or English and vice versa for the Medical Department.
- Informs his/her team about important cultural issues to consider during a meeting, a medical consultation or an interview with local people.
- Participates in staff trainings and meetings as an interpreter/ Translator.
- Translates documents and project materials into local language(s) as needed.
- Ensures confidentiality
- If needed, Support the Red Cross Relief Teams during the process of distributions
- Support the Red Cross Relief Team in facilitating community meetings and trainings to the Refugees/Migrants.
- Liaise and build a rapport with other existing interpreters / cultural mediators from other organisations.
- Stay informed about Red Cross services and activities in the site in order to provide clear information and referral.
- Consider special needs on access to information and referral from most vulnerable cases identified at camp level
- Ensure appropriate referrals are made when necessary to the available services such as medical referrals, camp management, asylum support and social services.
- Provide translation support to Red Cross staff and volunteers when required.
- The job duties and responsibilities as set out above are not exhaustive and the Post holder may be required to carry out additional duties within reasonableness of their level of skills and experience.

Requirements for the Role:

- Strong communication skills (written and spoken) in Farsi and English/Greek.
- Bachelor’s degree in Translations, or equivalent combination of education and work experience in an English/Greek speaking context will be preferred.
- Good attention to detail
- Fluently spoken and written Farsi and Greek / English
- Experience within the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement will be preferred
